Mechanical Design Engineer - Start-up - Medical Devices - Oxford

I'm looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in vacuum medical devices or semiconductors who can apply these skills in a real-world, fast moving start-up business setting.

You will have an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering and must be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers, physicists and commercial people.

Mechanical Engineer Job Summary:
Working within the Research & Development department, the Mechanical Engineer is responsible for manufacture and product development of company products.

Main duties and responsibilities:
*CAD and technical drawings for manufacture using SolidWorks or similar package
*Stress and thermal design verification using simulation tools
*Ultra high vacuum equipment specification and system design
*Static mechanical design including packaging and prototyping
*Test jig fabrication and assembly
*Leasing with machine shops and vendors to ensure project deliverables are met
*Generating innovative product concepts and solutions
*Maintain safe working environment and follow protocols to ensure compliance with company and regulatory standards
*Take ownership for project work and lead small projects and plan future product development
*Assist the build and progression of prototype units, with a view to develop into production assemblies

Qualifications:
*BEng Mechanical Engineering

Essential Experience:
*Proven track record of problem solving for mechanical systems
*Experience working in a precision engineering environment

Essential Skills:
*Excellent written and verbal communication skills
*Confidence to ask questions and a passion to find answers to get the job done
*Proactive, results-driven focus with the ability to identify and troubleshoot potential problems to their successful resolution
*Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
*Ability to work with a high level of autonomy, taking ownership of realising results
*Innovative thinker who can develop and apply out-of-the-box, novel solutions to problems

Desirable Skills and Experience:
*Machining using lathes or milling machines
*Experience with DFM for medical equipment
*R&D work in the semiconductor or vacuum industries or within the medical instrumentation field
