The highlight of the year for us is a diffuse one, because it’s made up of thousands of small interactions, all deriving from one decision. When the furlough scheme was announced in March, we had the option to ‘take the money’ and run a skeleton crew providing a purely reactive service. Given the size of our team and the threat of global economic slowdown, this was tempting. However, such a decision would have betrayed our 21-year strong commitment: to act as a valued member of the technology community rather than a ‘service supplier’. How could we be valuable to people in a highly uncertain time if we weren’t there to talk to them? (or Zoom them….but that wasn’t a word yet!)
So we furloughed an absolute minimum of the team and spent the next couple of months doing very little ‘active’ recruitment, but talking to more people than ever. For many of our candidates and clients, those calls were an opportunity to talk to a friendly ‘external’ party, as well as confirmation that the employment world wasn’t collapsing. It was great for us too…when there’s slightly less intense pressure around, people have more time to chat about their families, interests, hobbies. (One candidate had more time to practice for ploughing competitions in the company of his heritage breed Suffolk Punch heavy horse!)
So as 2020 winds down, we’ve emerged stronger than ever - and even more grateful for the fantastic industry we find ourselves working in. The positivity and creativity of the people we talk to, the resilience of individuals (and start ups pivoting to address the ‘new normal’), and the unquenched desire to innovate are all traits that remind us how lucky we are to be part of the technology community.
Other highlights of 2020:
We hired recruitment veterans Niall Fearon and Jon Gould to head up our Supply Chain and Creative divisions respectively. This now allows us to cover ALL of our client’s recruitment needs outside of legal and accounting – Semiconductors, Electronics, Software, Sales and Marketing, Creative, Supply Chain and IT are now all separate divisions with specialist ‘subsector’ recruitment experts in each team.
Innvotec VC announced IC Resources as the preferred recruitment partner for their portfolio of investments.
Our US division grew substantially, with myriad technical and Sales & Marketing (up to VP level) placements in California (North & South), Massachusetts, Colorado, Michigan, New York, Texas and North Carolina.
