Being flexible means you&#8217;re ready to do what it takes to change and transform whether that be in your personal or professional life.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-51a8ef5\" id=\"strong-what-is-coachability-strong\" data-block-id=\"51a8ef5\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\"><strong>What is coachability?<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-3faf1fd\" data-block-id=\"3faf1fd\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Coachability, quite simply, means that a person is receptive to feedback, to receiving constructive criticism, and will use that feedback and constructive criticism to improve&nbsp;his\/her\/their&nbsp;workplace performance. It refers to one\u2019s ability to learn and grow from the instruction of another, be it a teacher, mentor, or peer.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-8b80325\" data-block-id=\"8b80325\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">A coachable employee is someone who incorporates feedback and instructions to be successful throughout their career. These people tend to look for opportunities to learn from their mentors, supervisors, and peers daily. Coachable employees are team players who understand that group success relies on individual cooperation, and they know that they must accept criticism, uplift their teammates, and embrace differences to produce excellent work.&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-34d65c8\" data-block-id=\"34d65c8\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">In contrast, an employee that is difficult to coach will, deflect, make excuses, blame others, and generally have a bad attitude when their performance is being discussed.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-c238750\" id=\"strong-why-does-being-coachable-matter-strong\" data-block-id=\"c238750\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\"><strong>Why does being coachable matter?<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-43a85b4\" data-block-id=\"43a85b4\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">The ability to be coached is one of the most important traits of a successful leader.&nbsp;Being coachable is about realising your continued success requires being open to learn from others, confronting uncomfortable truths, working hard, and amplifying your performance.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-627321d\" data-block-id=\"627321d\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">For an employee,&nbsp;being coachable has many benefits, such as, increasing job satisfaction, becoming a better collaborator, and opening lots of opportunities for career growth<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-7efd98d\" id=\"strong-so-what-are-the-characteristics-of-a-coachable-employee-strong\" data-block-id=\"7efd98d\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\"><strong>So, what are the characteristics of a coachable employee?<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-b61189e\" id=\"strong-an-open-minded-nbsp-willingness-strong\" data-block-id=\"b61189e\"><style>.stk-b61189e .stk-block-heading__text{color:#ffffff !important;}<\/style><h4 class=\"stk-block-heading__text has-text-color\"><strong>An open minded&nbsp;willingness:<\/strong><\/h4><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-6abb422\" data-block-id=\"6abb422\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Coachability begins with a foundational willingness to learn and improve&nbsp;and coachable employees do not view feedback as an insult to their character or abilities. Instead, coachable employees give thanks for the feedback they receive without being sensitive or dramatic.&nbsp;Employees need to view coaching&nbsp;positively and consider&nbsp;that the organisation wants to invest in them, not a sign they doubt the employee\u2019s value.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-6fe35c3\" id=\"strong-asking-for-feedback-strong\" data-block-id=\"6fe35c3\"><style>.stk-6fe35c3 .stk-block-heading__text{color:#ffffff !important;}<\/style><h4 class=\"stk-block-heading__text has-text-color\"><strong>Asking for feedback:<\/strong><\/h4><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-894afc8\" data-block-id=\"894afc8\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">One of the&nbsp;most powerful&nbsp;and effective things&nbsp;you can do is to sincerely ask for feedback from your colleagues, especially your boss. It can be as simple as asking, \u201cGive me one suggestion for what I could do to be more effective in my job.\u201d&nbsp;Try and make these questions open and inviting to a discussion.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-d3a089d\" data-block-id=\"d3a089d\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Following on from this,&nbsp;you need to make sure you understand the seriousness or importance of the feedback. It could be a casual suggestion, or it could&nbsp;be&nbsp;career limiting. Make certain you know which&nbsp;and if you\u2019re uncertain about the exact meaning of the feedback, seek examples that will illustrate the message.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-57a7a0e\" id=\"strong-a-commitment-and-desire-strong\" data-block-id=\"57a7a0e\"><style>.stk-57a7a0e .stk-block-heading__text{color:#ffffff !important;}<\/style><h4 class=\"stk-block-heading__text has-text-color\"><strong>A commitment and desire:<\/strong><\/h4><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-7f911c6\" data-block-id=\"7f911c6\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">A deep and driven desire to learn and be better is foundational to a coachable mindset.&nbsp;A&nbsp;desire to learn, and a commitment to personal and organisational success is a bedrock for coachability.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-b7cb5c6\" id=\"strong-setting-goals-strong\" data-block-id=\"b7cb5c6\"><style>.stk-b7cb5c6 .stk-block-heading__text{color:#ffffff !important;}<\/style><h4 class=\"stk-block-heading__text has-text-color\"><strong>Setting goals:<\/strong><\/h4><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-a681df4\" data-block-id=\"a681df4\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">A coachable employee&nbsp;will know what they want&nbsp;to achieve in their careers. They may not always know which path they want to take, but they always have concrete achievements they want to make. They are driven to take the necessary steps to achieve their goals.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-ed38071\" id=\"strong-regular-self-reflection-strong\" data-block-id=\"ed38071\"><style>.stk-ed38071 .stk-block-heading__text{color:#ffffff !important;}<\/style><h4 class=\"stk-block-heading__text has-text-color\"><strong>Regular self-reflection:<\/strong><\/h4><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-930936c\" data-block-id=\"930936c\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Self-reflection is an important element of&nbsp;a&nbsp;coachable mindset. Honest self-reflection brings about actionable self-awareness.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-1a06fc5\" id=\"strong-3-strategies-to-be-a-coachable-employee-strong\" data-block-id=\"1a06fc5\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\"><strong>3 Strategies to be a coachable employee<\/strong><\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ae8b36744b8e951012e73daa3fc77fc7\"><strong>Exercise open-mindedness<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-592e8f2\" data-block-id=\"592e8f2\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">To improve this skill, engage in social activities that get you out of your comfort zone.&nbsp;One of the easiest ways to exercise this skill is to have a conversation with someone who has views you don\u2019t agree with. Try to listen and understand the other person\u2019s point of view. Don\u2019t try to respond as soon as possible. Listen, think, and absorb what the other person is saying. If you feel defensive or frustrated, ask questions to help you see eye to eye with them.&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f5aff2af96d3740edf90f0006cbaef27\"><strong>Exercise bravery and\u00a0get\u00a0out of your comfort zone<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-6b228fd\" data-block-id=\"6b228fd\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Having the courage to do something you\u2019re not good at or don\u2019t have confidence in takes patience. For example, embarking on a project that you want to be a part of but have little experience doing. Commit to doing this activity by making an appointment and tell someone you\u2019re going to do it to keep yourself accountable.&nbsp;Achieving goals takes courage, even if you are willing and have the desire. To be coachable, you must dig deeper and uncover the root of your fears and the cause of what stops you. When you\u2019re able to explore each fear, you\u2019ll often find that they\u2019re baseless.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f3aa624e0f64f24009c60b83ed1d6224\"><strong>Set yourself SMART goals<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-fa919c3\" data-block-id=\"fa919c3\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Set yourself \u201cSMART\u201d goals, which stands for &#8211; specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. Any measurable activity is a good one to exercise goal setting and risk-taking. In a work situation you could sit down you\u2019re your manager and discuss \/ write down goals you want to see yourself accomplish in your role. This makes it clear and easy to assess your progress.&nbsp;<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-e82b833\" data-block-id=\"e82b833\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">We recommend you ask a few specific questions about your performance.&nbsp;It doesn\u2019t have to be elaborate or extensive, just demonstrate that you are taking an interest in other people\u2019s perspective and modelling the receiving side of coaching.&nbsp;You can also use the information you gather to enhance your self-awareness and discover how people respond to your style and approach.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-8774270\" data-block-id=\"8774270\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Here are a few questions that can initiate receiving feedback:<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are you getting what you need from me as an employee?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How can I help support the business?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you feel I have been clear?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you have any suggestions for me that would help me be a more effective cemployee?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-2b30821\" data-block-id=\"2b30821\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">The questions above will demonstrate your active interest in being coached.
