How London is attracting top technology talent

2018 was a bumper year for London. According to research by London & Partners, the promotional agency of the Mayor of London’s office, the UK’s capital city attracted more top technology talent than the rest of Europe for the second year in a row.
Despite concerns around Brexit, and the capping on Tier 2 visas leading to more than 3,000 skilled potential employees being turned away last year, London companies are still attracting top technology talent from all around the globe.
In June 2018, the launch of the £13.5 million Cyber Innovation Centre served to boost London’s profile as a serious player on the global technology stage. Later in the year, the Digital Innovation Centre opened by Atos and Google, underlined how serious we, as a nation, are about technology.
Coding resource platform, Stack Overflow, recently found that London has around 357,900 software developers. That’s more than any other European city.
Britain isn’t stopping there though. Many high-profile technology companies are making long-term commitments to London, attracted by its ‘world-class talent pool’.
Apple is planning to open a new London HQ in 2020 in Battersea for 1,400 staff. Meanwhile, Google has chosen Kings Cross as home to their first fully owned and designed building outside of the US, complete with sleep pods and its own rooftop running track, and Imperial College London is opening a £10m research centre for medical advancements in AI.
