Yes, if you love the great outdoors, you\u2019ll love living and working in Grenoble.<\/p>\n Between 1869 and 1960, the population of Grenoble grew five-fold. Vast amounts of money were poured into a dramatic urban expansion plan in the lead up to the 1968 Winter Olympic Games, and since then, growth has shifted to the outer suburbs. These days, renting a three-bed home in Grenoble will cost around three times more than renting one on the outskirts of the city. To buy an apartment in the centre of Grenoble will cost around \u20ac3,137 per m2, whereas renting in the same area will cost around \u20ac176 per m2 per year.\u00a0 For a house, you can typically expect to pay more, whether renting or buying, with rent setting you back around \u20ac149 per m2 and buying a house costing anywhere between \u20ac1484 and \u20ac4514 per m2. This means the average house in Grenoble costs around \u20ac429,000[i]<\/a>. If you\u2019re a British citizen, you\u2019ll now need a visa to work in Grenoble. To secure a work visa, you\u2019ll have to submit an employment contract with your application and your employer will have to apply for your work permit. Once you\u2019ve been granted a long-stay visa (which will also serve as a residence permit), you\u2019ll be able to stay in France for up to 12 months before needing to reapply.<\/p>\n If you\u2019re from another European Union member state, you\u2019ll be able to make the most of life in Grenoble without having to secure a visa first.<\/p>\n If you\u2019re only looking to work in France for three months, you\u2019ll still need a short-term visa.<\/p>\n Living in Grenoble isn\u2019t cheap, but it\u2019s certainly not as expensive as some other parts of France.<\/p>\n A meal for two at a mid-range restaurant will cost around \u20ac50, but a McDonalds or equivalent fast-food meal will only set you back around \u20ac9. These are all co-educational, state-financed institutions, which replaced the original 1339 University of Grenoble founded by Pope Benedict XII \u2013 the original university was a leader in the revival of the classics and the development of liberal arts.
