Salary 35K plus bonus

Overall Job Purpose
* To investigate and diagnose problems with the materials currently used in serial production and recommend solutions to deliver product improvements
* To evaluate and select alternative materials and solutions that offer improved production yield, lower production cost, enhanced reliability and extended maintenance-free service life

Main tasks and responsibilities
* Evaluate and recommend materials solutions to meet design, manufacturing process, procurement specifications and end-user priorities.
* Conduct FMEA analyses of materials and analyse production failures to provide recommendations for improving the quality, reliability and lifetime of products
* Identify areas where improvements can be made by the evaluation and selection of alternative materials
* Plan and carry out environmental tests to characterise the properties of materials and their suitability for the range of environmental and operating conditions of products
* Conduct research in corrosion, weathering and material degradation and recommend defensive measures for long maintenance-free service life
* Carry out failure and degradation analysis of field returns to identify design weakness and improvements
* Identify and support the introduction of metrology systems to improve the quality control and consistency of materials at the production & test stages
* Ensure that materials meet stringent quality, safety and environmental standards
* Liaise with manufacturing and supply chain departments, sub-contractors, suppliers and customers to resolve problems

* Attend relevant training identified to ensure duties are performed efficiently

Person Specification

* BSc in Materials Science or related engineering degree
* Robust, practical post graduate experience in similar industry
* Robust knowledge of potential appropriate sources for materials relevant to company products.
* Demonstrated ability in problem analysis, solutions research for alternative materials and successful solutions creation in related environment
* Evidence of good contacts and networking in the science industry to optimise materials knowledge base
* Investigative approach
* Self-motivated, comfortable in working independently and able to prioritise
* Collaborative approach and proven flexibility to work as part of a cross functional team
* Proven excellent communication and networking skills
* Comfortable working to time constraints to meet agreed deadlines
* High standards of personal and professional integrity
