Senior Mechanical Engineer

My client, a rapidly growing start up in the the field of biotechnology, is looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the team in Cambridge. This role will involve working on various projects related to the development of their technology platform. This is a rare opportunity to play an important role in the development of a cutting-edge technology, and as part of a dynamic early-stage company. Overall, this role would suit candidates that have a solid background in the mechanical and microfluidics engineering, especially in biomedical applications. Previous experience in the development of systems-on-chip for genetic analysis would be of great value.


Responsibilities:


Supporting the development of the company's' innovative digital instrument platform

Specifically:

  • Lead the mechanical design involved in the instrument platform development
  • Develop and refine the sample preparation process flow
  • Design, build, verify and validate the mechanical and microfluidics devices for the existing platform and platform under development
  • Collaborate with external partners in product design, fabrication and test
  • Engage in the system integration of the platform and its subsystems
  • Contribution to internal and external, informal and formal design reviews
  • Participation in group meetings, and presentation of work to group members


Required Qualifications, Experience, and Qualities


*BS/MS/PhD in mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering with a minimum of 10 years relevant industry experience

*Experienced in at least three of the following areas: control systems, system integration, mass flow and thermodynamics, microfluidics systems, injection moulding and/or optical systems

*Highly competent in generating mechanical design drawings using Solidworks or other similar mechanical design toolboxes

*Proficient with performing finite element modelling for fluidics systems and thermodynamic systems

*Experience with the design, fabrication and test of complex and low-cost microfluidic devices using biocompatible materials and injection moulding techniques, in both prototype quantities and full-scale manufacturing

*Demonstrated experience with experimental design, failure analysis and root cause analysis

*Demonstrated hands on engineering capability with proven track record of high quality designs that met product requirements on time and on budget

*Experience with thermal modelling of a mechanical system, ideally using COMSOL

*Thermal system and high precision mechanical system design experience

*Excellent interpersonal and communications skills

*Both a team-player and able to work autonomously

*Highly motivated and results-driven


Desirable Qualifications & Experience

*Experience with MEMS fabrication and nanofabrication

*Experience with flow injection

*Experience with interfacing with biochemistry, surface chemistry and electronic engineering teams

*Knowledge of software programming or electronic engineer design at system level

*Knowledge and skills in process and product validation of a variety of equipment and processes used to build medical products, particularly ISO 13485 and FDA QSR experience preferred.

*General familiarity with life sciences is advantageous but not required
