Madrid is very much an up-and-coming technology hub, just waiting for its moment, and with investments less expensive than in Paris and London, investors are starting to see the appeal.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-53e39db\" data-block-id=\"53e39db\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Entrepreneurs name the high quality of life and the low cost of living as key attractions to Spain, although Madrid also offers a jumping off point for the sizeable LatAm market.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-176ecc6\" id=\"things-you-didnt-know-about-madrid\" data-block-id=\"176ecc6\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Things you didn\u2019t know about Madrid<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-c59321d\" data-block-id=\"c59321d\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Madrid is the third biggest city in the EU, following closely on the heels of London and Berlin. However, Madrid isn\u2019t simply a city, it\u2019s a state \u2013 one of 17 autonomous communities that make up Spain.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-a3608e8\" data-block-id=\"a3608e8\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Madrid, home to 1,235 start-ups, has one of the fastest growing tech start-up scenes in Europe. This isn\u2019t a well-known fact because many of these start-ups are still in their infancy and therefore don\u2019t attract large investments. A stark contrast to Barcelona which saw projects launch at the end of the 1990s and now attracts around \u20ac871million in investment.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-7b57082\" data-block-id=\"7b57082\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Madrid is already home to one unicorn, a ride-hailing service Cabify, however regulations imposed by the Catalan regional government may limit the growth of Madrid\u2019s golden child.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-99162af\" id=\"housing\" data-block-id=\"99162af\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Housing<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-fad5111\" data-block-id=\"fad5111\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">If you\u2019re looking to live in Madrid, you may find yourself looking to rent a flat (or a Piso). This is the most common type of accommodation in Madrid and is the most common rental choice for young professionals in the Spanish capital. You can expect to pay between \u20ac800 &#8211; \u20ac1200 per month for a piso, but accommodation in a more affluent area could set you back up to \u20ac2000.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-f1dada3\" data-block-id=\"f1dada3\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">If you\u2019re moving the whole family, a three-bed apartment will cost you between \u20ac2500 and \u20ac4000 per month. Detached single family homes are available but these are found only within the suburbs.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-19123e1\" data-block-id=\"19123e1\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Whatever type of accommodation you\u2019re considering, make sure you find out where you will be working before committing yourself. Madrid is a sprawling city and, despite good public transport options, commutes from one side of the city to the other can still be lengthy.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-744b942\" data-block-id=\"744b942\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Expect to pay one month\u2019s rent up front when you sign a contract and check whether utilities are included \u2013 often in Spain, your rental doesn\u2019t include water, electricity and gas.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-28b93e3\" data-block-id=\"28b93e3\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">It may be wise to rent or stay in temporary accommodation when you first arrive in Madrid, whilst you get to know the area. Some expat sites suggest it can take 3 weeks to find and organise your new home, particularly if you are preparing to start your new job at the end of the summer, start of the autumn, which is the busiest time of the year for lettings.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-ca43f21\" id=\"madrids-visa-requirements\" data-block-id=\"ca43f21\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Madrid\u2019s visa requirements<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-7b450cd\" data-block-id=\"7b450cd\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">In most cases, you\u2019ll need to secure a job in Spain before securing your visa.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-1566d3a\" data-block-id=\"1566d3a\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">However, if you\u2019re in an EU or EEA citizen, you won\u2019t need a visa to live and work in Spain.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-639f3ae\" data-block-id=\"639f3ae\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">There are some exceptions to those not from the EU and EEA who wish to live and work in Spain such as academics, scientists working on specific projects, or close relatives joining family member working in Spain for a year or more.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-af01bf6\" data-block-id=\"af01bf6\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Once you\u2019ve secured a new position in Spain, your employer will need to apply to the provincial office of the Ministry of Labour for a work permit on your behalf but processing a work permit can take up to 8 months. A work permit is valid for a year and can be renewed providing that you still meet the criteria.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-6206683\" data-block-id=\"6206683\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">However, permits are typically granted for certain sectors, so once you have a permit, you can usually move jobs without having to renew the permit, providing you remain within the sector.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-413f1ef\" id=\"the-cost-of-living-in-madrid\" data-block-id=\"413f1ef\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">The Cost of Living in Madrid<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-06f4c1f\" data-block-id=\"06f4c1f\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">On top of your accommodation, you\u2019ll probably need to budget for utilities. In Madrid, you should expect these to cost around \u20ac128 per month according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.numbeo.com\/cost-of-living\/compare_cities.jsp?country1=United+Kingdom&amp;country2=Spain&amp;city1=London&amp;city2=Madrid&amp;tracking=getDispatchComparison\">Numbeo<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-bf32756\" data-block-id=\"bf32756\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">On average, consumer prices in Madrid are 24% lower than in London. A litre of milk will cost you just \u20ac0.81 (75p) and a loaf of bread will take, on average, just \u20ac1.02 of your hard-earned cash. Rent averages out at 36% lower than in London. A good meal out will cost around \u20ac11, around 28% less than a meal in London, whilst a meal at home will only be 15% less expensive.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-e8afff5\" data-block-id=\"e8afff5\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">In London, you\u2019d pay around \u00a35.00 for a domestic beer, whereas in Madrid, you\u2019d be looking at a dramatically different \u20ac3.00.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-f96d4bb\" id=\"salaries-in-madrid\" data-block-id=\"f96d4bb\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Salaries in Madrid<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-4a17880\" data-block-id=\"4a17880\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Whilst the average salary in Madrid weighs in at just \u20ac1600 per month, salaries can range from \u20ac20,000 to \u20ac37,000. The average IT consultant salary in Spain is \u20ac31,653 but can creep up to \u20ac49,000 for those with heavyweight experience.&nbsp;Software developer roles average at \u20ac35,636 iOS developer approximately&nbsp;\u20ac30,511 and&nbsp;Senior Web Developers at around \u20ac36,735.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-396d6ba\" id=\"schools\" data-block-id=\"396d6ba\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Schools<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-6d67498\" data-block-id=\"6d67498\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">When choosing a school, your decision will be led by how long you are planning to stay in Spain and whether your children need to immerse themselves fully in the culture and the language or keep up with their peers in the UK, on a British curriculum.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-d2ce43c\" id=\"state-schools\" data-block-id=\"d2ce43c\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">State schools<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-7782b25\" data-block-id=\"7782b25\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">State schools are state-funded and state-run. Some are bilingual, others aren\u2019t. In bilingual schools, around a third of classes are taught in English. This is different to the Spanish curriculum, which is what students in state schools typically follow and is different from the British or US curriculum.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-8c787f1\" id=\"privately-run-state-funded-schools\" data-block-id=\"8c787f1\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Privately-run, state-funded schools<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-7d6191f\" data-block-id=\"7d6191f\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Also known as Concertados, these schools are mainly bilingual. &nbsp;If you\u2019re employed by a Spanish company, your children will be entitled to free education in a state-funded school. Many Concertados are run by religious orders, so are likely to be heavily religious in their influence.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-25f5da6\" id=\"private-bilingual-schools\" data-block-id=\"25f5da6\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Private bilingual schools<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-6a1a8c6\" data-block-id=\"6a1a8c6\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">These private schools can cost between \u20ac4000 and \u20ac10,000 a year.Most classes are taught in English and the curriculum is usually British and co-validated with GCSE and A\u2019 Levels \u2013 essential if you have your sights set on a UK university. Usually in private bilingual schools, half of the students are Spanish or bi-national children, but this can vary.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-8ca3677\" id=\"global-companies-in-madrid\" data-block-id=\"8ca3677\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Global Companies in Madrid<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-f22a42d\" data-block-id=\"f22a42d\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Many of the tech companies in Madrid are new and growing, but there are some market leaders already calling Madrid their home. These include Accenture, E-Dreams, HP, Amazon, IBM and Everis.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-c650425\" id=\"in-your-spare-time\" data-block-id=\"c650425\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">In your spare time<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-2e8e199\" data-block-id=\"2e8e199\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Of course, life in Madrid isn\u2019t all about work. In your down time you can explore the local area. Madrid is a city teeming with life and cultural opportunities. One of its greatest secrets are its art museums and galleries, with their renaissance masterpieces and seminal 20<sup>th<\/sup>Century artefacts. The legendary Prado is just one of these.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-207a0b3\" data-block-id=\"207a0b3\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">If you fancy a spot of greenery, head to Retiro park with its bald cypresses that turn golden brown in summer.
