Recent data from PwC reveals that a staggering 78% of students still can&#8217;t name a single woman in tech. This lack of recognition underscores the importance of celebrating the contributions of pioneering women in technology.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Working from Home &#8211; Mary Allen Wilkes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><br \/>Mary Allen Wilkes is often credited as one of the earliest proponents of working from home. In the 1960s, she helped develop the world&#8217;s first mini-computer, laying the groundwork for the personal computers we use today. Her forward-thinking approach paved the way for the widespread remote work that became essential during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Wi-Fi &#8211; Hedy Lamarr<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><br \/>Hollywood actress Hedy Lamarr played a pivotal role in developing spread-spectrum radio technology during World War II, which later became the foundation for Wi-Fi. Today, Wi-Fi is integral to our ability to work from virtually anywhere, from trains to coffee shops.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Computer Coding &#8211; Rear Admiral Dr. Grace Hopper<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><br \/>Grace Hopper, a U.S. Navy Rear Admiral, was a pioneer in automatic programming. She created the first compiler in 1952, which translated mathematical code into machine-readable code. Her work led to the development of COBOL, one of the first standardized programming languages.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Computer Programming &#8211; Ada Lovelace<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><br \/>Ada Lovelace, working in the mid-19th century, is often credited with writing the first computer program. She developed algorithms for Charles Babbage&#8217;s Analytical Engine, which are considered the first computer programs. Lovelace\u2019s work laid the foundation for modern computer science.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Computer Aesthetics &#8211; Susan Kare<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><br \/>Susan Kare is the designer behind the iconic user interface elements of Apple&#8217;s early products. She has also designed for major tech companies like Microsoft, Facebook, and Pinterest. Her work has shaped the way we interact with technology today.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Encouraging the Next Generation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><br \/>According to the latest statistics, women now make up only 26% of the STEM workforce, highlighting the ongoing gender disparity in the field. Shockingly, only 16% of young women have had technology suggested to them as a career, and a mere 22% can name a famous woman in tech. The need for female role models in tech is more pressing than ever to encourage the next Ada Lovelace or Hedy Lamarr\u200b (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theiet.org\/media\/press-releases\/press-releases-2024\/press-releases-2024-january-march\/8-march-2024-over-one-million-women-now-in-stem-occupations-but-still-account-for-29-of-stem-workforce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IET &#8211; Home<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stemwomen.com\/women-in-stem-statistics-progress-and-challenges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stem Women<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>On this International Women\u2019s Day, let&#8217;s inspire and support the next generation of women in technology.
