Job ID: 504930

My client is searching for a Chief Engineer, to lead the development of their laser drilling R&D programme. This is a highly technical leadership position, where you have ownership of the system architecture and technical development direction of their advanced laser technology.

As Chief Engineer, you will have the opportunity to lead a team of Engineers and Scientists, working from R&D through to real-world deployment.

This is an onsite position, based in Munich.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the technical development and direction of an advanced laser drilling system from R&D through to field deployment.

  • Own the system architecture and make key engineering decisions across optics, optomechanics and the wider system.

  • Lead the development and integration of complex optical and optomechanical systems.

  • Work closely with mechanical, thermal, electronics and sensor engineers to develop the complete system.

  • Remain hands-on with design, testing, troubleshooting and technical problem solving.

  • Identify and resolve complex engineering challenges across the system.

  • Support and mentor junior engineers, providing technical guidance and helping to develop the optics team.

  • Potentially take responsibility for leading the optics team, depending on experience and capability.

  • Drive the transition of technology from laboratory development into reliable operation in real-world environments.

Requirements:

  • Strong professional background in optics, optical engineering or a closely related discipline.

  • Extensive experience developing complex laser (CW), or high-power optical systems, preferably in the kW range.

  • Strong depth across optics and optomechanics, with a broad understanding of wider engineering disciplines.

  • Demonstrable experience working with the mechanical structures and supporting systems surrounding complex laser systems.

  • Strong understanding of thermal management, mechanical engineering, sensors, optics and optomechanics

Desirable:

  • Experience taking hardware from concept through to field operation
  • Experience working with systems deployed in harsh environments
  • Experience with SolidWorks and/or Zemax is useful
  • Experience from defence, industrial lasers, or other high power-laser applications, is advantageous
