Senior Embedded Software Engineer

£55,000–£65,000 + benefits
Stockport (four days onsite, one day working from home)

Start Date: ASAP, with major board bring-up activities beginning in September.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join a growing engineering team developing next-generation digital imaging technology. With a flagship product due to launch this autumn, this role offers the chance to take ownership of critical embedded software and SDK development in a fast-moving, highly collaborative environment.

The opportunity

You’ll be responsible for developing and maintaining the embedded software that powers advanced hardware products, including:

  • Embedded C development at register level
  • USB 3.x control and data-path implementation
  • Designing and maintaining low-level C APIs and SDKs
  • Board bring-up and hardware validation
  • Working directly with electronics and FPGA engineers during development
  • Owning the software interface used by both internal and external engineering teams

This is a highly hands-on role where you’ll be embedded within the hardware team, working at the bench during bring-up and debugging activities rather than operating independently from the hardware development process.

What we’re looking for:

Essential skills

  • Strong Embedded C development experience on real hardware
  • Hands-on hardware debugging using oscilloscopes and logic analysers
  • Experience developing host-side software in C
  • Previous ownership of an SDK, API, device driver, or software library used by other engineers, teams, or customers
  • USB experience (device or host side) or another high-speed communications interface
  • Board bring-up experience alongside hardware engineers
  • Degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related discipline

Highly desirable

  • USB 3.x or Cypress FX3 firmware experience
  • Experience owning customer-facing SDKs
  • CI/CD and build automation experience
  • Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing
  • Imaging systems, sensors, detector readout, or data acquisition experience
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with FPGA engineers and understand HDL designs

Why Apply?

  • Take ownership of a customer-facing SDK and API
  • Influence architecture, testing strategy, and software direction
  • Work closely with hardware and FPGA experts
  • Join a small, highly collaborative engineering team
  • Play a key role in bringing innovative products to market
  • Fast interview process with CV feedback typically provided within 48 hours

Interview process

  1. Introductory call
  2. Technical discussion
  3. On-site interview with the engineering team

Please note This role is unlikely to suit candidates seeking:

  • Fully remote positions
  • Pure application/software development roles
  • Pure FPGA/RTL development positions
  • Roles with limited hardware interaction
  • Large-team environments with a narrow area of responsibility

The key differentiator for this role is experience developing SDKs, APIs, device drivers, or software libraries that external engineers or customers have relied upon. If you’ve built software interfaces that others have developed against, I’d love to hear from you!
